"Good Readers and Good Writers"

In this short article Nabokov states that a good reader is more of a re-reader.  By saying this, he is suggesting that the effort it takes to actually read and understand the material takes away from the enjoyment of the story or topic of the writing.  He compares it to a painting.  You don't have to do anything but enjoy a painting, where reading takes work before you can enjoy.  I also liked the list of things that makes a good reader.  He said to pick at least 4 of the 10 things.  I don't really consider myself a good reader, or a good writer for that matter.  I guess thats why I'm in this class.  I'll probably refer to this list of things that makes one a good reader a number of times in the future.  I tend to lose interest when I read and I hope this list will help me in that area.

Here is a link to some quotes by Vladimir Nabokov

  1. Hey Stephen! I also hope for your sake, that this class will make you a better reader. Reading and writing is a passion for me, but I know that it causes so much frustration, and boredom for a LOT of people. Obviously, you've already been through ENG101, and I don't know about you, but reading and responding to people who are simply reading and responding bores me to tears! It sounds like this class we actually get to read fiction, and poetry, and things that move people. Maybe you just haven't been moved by literature yet. I hope you do this semester. Good luck =)

  2. Hi Stephen, I really like how you emphasized Nabokov's idea about the way reading compares to looking at a painting. It is a very interesting way to think about it and I had never really thought about it that way. I also like your link to the Nabokov quotes, which was very clever. I particularly like the quote, "Life is a great sunrise. I do not see why death should not be an even greater one." Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hey Stephen! English is definitely my weakest subject. We can get through this together though. Maybe we just need this class to open up our minds a little more to reach deep down and get that creativeness out of us. Who knows. I took English 101 last semester in class because I figure online classes weren't the smartest way for me to go my first semester. I always worried that I would forget about doing them and never get a good grade. But now it's my second semester and I'm taking 2 online and 2 at the school. English is very stressful and frustrating to me, I feel like I can never do my best because I don't like it that much. This semester could be different though I could open up my mind and just let it wander. Good luck this semester!
